Welcome to HIEROTOPOI

We are delighted to announce the launch of the official website for HIEROTOPOI, a research project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

The HIEROTOPOI project (Historizing Interrituality with the Environment and Religious Orography in TOPOgraphic Interactions) is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the creation, perception, and evolution of sacred spaces in ancient polytheistic contexts. By examining the complex interplay between landscape, architecture, and human experience, our research aims to uncover the mechanisms through which spaces are transformed into “sacralized” sites and how these places, in turn, shape cultural and religious identities.

Through this news feed, we will be sharing:

  • Research Updates: Progress reports on our ongoing investigations.
  • Fieldwork Insights: Direct notes and visual documentation from our research sites.
  • Academic Milestones: Information about upcoming publications, conferences, and lectures.
  • Community Highlights: Collaborations and reflections on the broader impact of sacred space studies.

This digital space serves as a bridge between our academic rigor and the public interest. We invite you to follow our journey as we navigate the historical and contemporary layers of HIEROTOPOI.
